What is Maca?

Maca is a herbaceous plant with a tuber root, a globular rounded shape with a variety of colors (from light yellow, pink, unevenly faded, purple & black.) Maca root has been used since the Inca era. It was the most widespread crop to be produced, consumed & traded, & was of utmost importance in the diet of the Inca & gave them the energy they needed to fight. Maca has a high nutritional value that includes the main metabolites: Proteins, glucides, vitamins, minerals, etc. .With the presence of large quantities of fructose & sugar, which upon metabolizing, do not convert into reserve matter nor blood sugar, which is why it is used as a sweetener for diabetics & diabetic products. It is as a quick source of energy & metabolic stimulant against various infections or in normal conditions. Because of its invigorating & energizing effect, athletes consume it to combat fatigue.

What nutrients does Maca contain?

There are almost 60 phytochemicals in a single root. Chemical analysis of Maca root reveals a brain-powering amino acid profile & includes 8 minerals, 6 sterols, 20 fatty acids & a full array of vitamins, saponins, & complex carbohydrates (“Good” carbs) proteins. In addition: Iodine, saponines, triterpenoids, aromatic “glucosinolates” & flavonoids. As vitamins are indispensable in metabolic activity of cells & are generally not synthesized by the human organism, the vitamin contribution of Maca is important: calcium & phosphorus fortify bones & iron has a direct result in synthesizing hemoglobin. The root forms a unique association of natural estrogen & “glucosinolates” bio chemical with action, to which is attributed the regulation of a hormone secretion & its beneficial effects of the human reproductive process.

How does Maca Work?

Maca is a hormone balancer & an adaptogen. Hormone or endocrine system consists of the pituitary axis & thyroid & adrenal glands. This system affects sexuality, growth, strength & energy. The pituitary gland is the “Master“ gland because it controls the hormone output of the other three glands. When the endocrine system is malfunctioning, the thyroid, for example, puts out too little or too much of the hormone thyroxin, which affects energy levels. Maca, a hormone balancer, helps stimulate the pituitary gland, acting as a kind of tonic for the hormone output of the other endocrine glands. Nutrient rich Maca is also known as an adaptogen, which is a food that boosts the body’s ability to deal with stress & disease. Maca works in accordance with individual needs, age & gender, stimulating the body to produce the hormones needed to meet each user’s unique requirements. Maca is both a hormone balancer & an adaptogen. If your endocrine system is out of balance, Maca helps restore equilibrium. Some benefits of a balanced endocrine system are what Maca is best known for: increased libido, energy & stamina, as well as fertility & sexual enhancement for both men & women. In addition, hormonal stability sharpens the mind & generates a sense of wellbeing.

How much do I take?

It depends on the individual. Two level teaspoons is the amount that works for most people. A smaller person may want to start with one teaspoon & work up from there.

When can I expect to see results?

Again, individual results vary. Some people notice immediate results while for others it may take several weeks. It is important to take enough, to take it regularly & to be patient allowing the body to adjust at its own rate. Since Maca is a food, it can be taken continuously for extended periods of time.

How do I take Maca?

There are a variety of ways to take Maca. You can add it to smoothies, almond milk, milk shakes or juices in your blender. It is better NOT to take Maca with citrus juices. You can mix it into hot cereal or mix it in with yogurt. Maca works best when you eat it in the morning. Some people find that if they take it late in the day, they are too energized for sleep at their bedtime.

Are there any side effects?

As Maca is a commonly consumed food product it is considered very safe. No reports of toxicity or adverse side effects have been reported.

  • Love your products. I use your mouthwash, toothpaste and this wonderful maca powder. Question did you stop making the Inca Protein powder? Loved that too.
